Materials necessary to trim a home is available at local mill companies and lumber yards.
I have been a trim carpenter for over 37 years. I have tried different techniques of trimming through the years, but the following instructions are designed the way I have found to be the fastest way to trim and still have the highest quality. After you have mastered the techniques and follow safety rules, you too can trim a home or a room. If you are thinking about building a home, talk to your builder about you doing some work yourself. This work can then be applied to your down payment. There is work that you can do like trimming, painting, staining, tile, hardwood floor installation, even roofing, and do not forget about clean up.
The following categories are set up in mind of the order a room or house needs to be trimmed. I have included pictures and videos to help you trim a home or room.
You need to check building codes for your community. Also, unless you are experienced in the use of tools needed, I highly suggest that you take some time and try out your tools on scrap pieces of material before starting a project!!!
Basic trim categories:
Doors: Prehung Doors, Cased Openings, Windows: Sill and apron, Casing only, Extension jam with casing, Closets: Linen, Pole and Shelf, High low, and Stacks of Shelves, Base, Base shoe (Quarter Round)
I have also included the following:
Crown heads for windows or doors, Crown molding, Chair rail, Hearth, Mantel, Overlay Panels (Deca squares)
Just double click on any of the above categories to get step by step instructions. I have also included a list of the tools necessary to perform each category. If you are not going to use a compressor and finish nailer, DON’T FORGET to take a nail set and set all nails below the surface of wood. Also, you will need to fill all nail holes and joints with proper wood filler for the type of material you are using and be sure to sand with an orbital sander when wood filler is dry. In the following pages under tools needed it states that you need a nailer, compressor, and hose. You can use a hammer and nails instead. If you are using a compressor and finish nailer, set compressor so nails are below the surface of the wood. I highly recommend that you rent a compressor, finish nailer, hose, and also a mitre box. TIME IS MONEY!
With these step by step instruction you will have the skills required to do most wood projects, from toy boxes to the sky. Only your imagination will limit your results. Reminder SAFETY FIRST!!! PLEASE READ SAFETY PAGE OF THIS WEBSITE!
